Colorado rules, in plain English
When the state says you need a test
Remodeling a house
A certified inspector must test before you disturb more than 32 square feet of other surfaces, 50 linear feet of pipe or one 55-gallon drum of material.
Tearing a building down
An inspection is required before every demolition, plus a state demolition notice ($50 plus $5 for every 1,000 square feet demolished). Denver needs state approval first.
Removing it
Crumbly ("friable") asbestos above those amounts must be removed by a state-certified abatement contractor under a state permit, after a 10-working-day notice.

Where we help
Denver and nearby cities
From Wash Park and the Highlands to Park Hill, Cherry Creek and Capitol Hill, many Denver homes were built well before October 12, 1988 — the date after which Colorado lets you skip the inspection with a signed form. If your house is older than that, plan on a test before a remodel or tear-down.

Questions
Common questions
Do I need an asbestos test before I remodel in Denver?
Colorado requires a test by a state-certified inspector before work that disturbs more than 32 square feet of other surfaces, 50 linear feet of pipe, or one 55-gallon drum of material in a single-family home. Below that, the state recommends testing but does not require it.
Do I need a test before I tear down a house?
Yes. Colorado requires an inspection by a certified asbestos inspector before every demolition, no matter how much material is involved, and a state demolition notice even when no asbestos is found. Denver requires state approval before it issues a demolition permit.
Can I remove asbestos myself?
Colorado law exempts a person removing asbestos from the single-family home that is their own primary residence. The state says homeowners who plan to rent, sell or demolish the home should call it first, and waste rules still apply. Most people hire a certified contractor because disturbing asbestos releases fibers that cause lung disease.
How much does a state asbestos permit cost?
For a single-family home, the state abatement permit is $180 for 30 days, $300 for 90 days or $420 for a year. The state demolition notice is $50 plus $5 for every 1,000 square feet demolished.
Is this site an asbestos company?
No. We connect you with independent, Colorado-certified asbestos inspectors and abatement contractors. We don’t do the work ourselves.
